What colour walls go with purple carpet?

We moved house in April and the decor in the lounge is really annoying me now. Basically it is a big room (sort of lounge/diner size) with a pinky purple carpet and matching curtains at the patio doors. The walls are a dark pinky purple wallpaper on the bottom half, have a cream dado(sp) rail, then have a light pinky purple wallpaper with darker flowers on the top half (plus a matching border above the dado rail as they seemed to be obsessed by borders!)

Although I like pinky purple it's all a bit much so I want to redecorate. We can't really afford to get a new carpet or curtains so need to do something with the walls to calm it down a bit. I was thinking of just magnolia but the there is also a cream fireplace and I'm not sure if that would look strange.

So I'm looking for some decorating suggestions/ideas

What colour walls go with purple carpet?
I am an interior decorator and this is how I would solve this issue.

If the wallpaper is in good condition you can paint over it for a very quick change. Otherwise remove it and prepare the wall for a new paint job. The dado attracts your eye to the walls so you might consider removing it.

Go to your local paint store and find a sample chip as close to your carpet as possible. Or take a carpet piece with you if you have one. Look through the colours. The staff will also be able to help you out with choosing a colour that is in the correct tone of the colour you choose. A white wall is too strong for purple and will look like a college dorm. Cream or beige is passe.

My vote would be for a very pale lavender which would co-ordinate with your carpet and drapes and create a harmonious look which would also be calming.

This is the best I can do since you did not describe your furniture or preferred style.

Good Luck!
Reply:Definately a cream color wall or white. We moved into our house and there is "blood red" carpet all over. That's hard to deal with too because I like red, but not on the floors. It's grown on me, but all my walls are antique white. And I bought some sheers that have just a touch of red in them and that brought the red up off the floor and made it flow better. Good luck!
Reply:PUKE COLOR, BECAUSE ... if you have purple you might as well screw everything else up
Reply:Plain white, "eggshell" off-white, or a light or medium grey would calm it down.

Light blue is possible as it will complement the purple carpet, but it may still be a bit much, as you are trying to de-emphasise the pink/purple theme rather than complement it.

Brown or other dark colours will make the room look smaller, which would usually be a mistake in a small/medium room, although if it's a large room that may actually be a desirable effect. Purple carpet seems a bit much.

Avoid yellow, green, or orange (as if you would even contemplate orange).
Reply:What about painting the walls a sage green?? Might just work ;)
Reply:Paint with an off white, it will definately calm down the color. You could even do a darker color (no u since I am an american :-) ) under, and sponge a lighter color on top.
Reply:If you want it to look like an actual room for adults to hang out in instead of an 8 year old girls room, go with Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint. They offer the best colors that are different from anywhere else. I would go with a deep olive green. This color of green with the purple-y walls will tone down the childish color and make it more grown up by giving it a feeling of a martini bar- dark and winery... Good Luck.
Reply:Paint the whole room pearl white! Its a neutral color and it does with everything! You will have to either remove the wallpaper or you can paint it with oil based KILLS and then texture over it, then prime it with pva primer and paint it pearl white. The purpose of painting wallpaper with the oil base the texturing with joint compound(drywall mud) is to prevent the wallpaper from bubbling and cracking your new paint job!
Reply:there is no "U" in color
Reply:BURNT ORANGE !! Just think of how that would look with that cream fireplace !!!

: )
Reply:I think instead of changing the walls to match the carpet... you should yank up the pinky purple carpet and toss the window treatments... Then settle on something you really like... and make the room uniquely yours... you'll be much more comfortable in it...
Reply:Hey I like purple, I had a room that had too much purple in it too. I found a paint that really worked. I got it at medareds, it was called new age Cristal. It was a very light shade of gray with a purple under tone, I know it sounds wired. But as the sunlight came in the wall colore changed with the type of light that hit it. One area might look gray or lavender, it was like one shade blading into the other. I had a lot of complements on it. One of the answers was to tare up the carpet and drapes but they did not think about all the work and cost of what is in voled in that. And you might like the purple carpet, do what you want and what your budget will alowe.
Reply:Try a shade of brown, chocolate, mocha, etc....
Reply:Very light sage.
Reply:White would work well or maybe a cream color.
Reply:well first - definitely get rid of that hideous wall paper!

and personally, i'd go with a very light lavender - it'll look great!
Reply:beige
Reply:I would just do the walls a light, natural color (off-white, biege, etc). That would go with the mauve color of the carpet and drapes and you could still incorperate other accent colors that you like.
Reply:Cream a little more intense or less intense than your fireplace, pale yellow, off white, magnolia might go good too. Get some of those pant sample cards from your paint store and lay them on your carpet to see what you like. Then put it against your fireplace and drapes to see how it goes. Don't stress. Have fun. I do know that color can and is spelled with a U in many places in the world.
Reply:The color that compliments purple on the color spectrum is yellow, so I'd suggest a very light beige with yellowish undertones to tone it down. That would go pretty well if you'd want to go with magnolia. You can use up to 3 colors, as long as they're not complete opposites or something like that.
