peony?
you can add details to your question in response to the answers given rather than posting an additional question
what zone is it grown in and what time of year does it bloom?
peonies are blooming right now in zone 6b
This is a purple flower looking similar to a football mum but at the top of a 3 ft. stem?
Ornamental Onion or garlic if it is a single stalk per plant, but it would be a Peony on a larger plant with multi-section leaves and it would be a hydrangea (ball form) if it is on a plant that has leaves all the way along that stem and forms a decent-sized shrub.
Reply:I think you are referring to an allium. It is a bulb plant and will grow every summer unless squirrels get to the bulbs.
Reply:It sounds like a Dahlia cultivar like Thomas Edison. Dahlias bloom earlier than mums. Dahlias bloom in the spring to summer.
Reply:Allium?
