This is a purple flower looking similar to a football mum but at the top of a 3 ft. stem?
Ornamental Onion or garlic if it is a single stalk per plant, but it would be a Peony on a larger plant with multi-section leaves and it would be a hydrangea (ball form) if it is on a plant that has leaves all the way along that stem and forms a decent-sized shrub.
Reply:I think you are referring to an allium. It is a bulb plant and will grow every summer unless squirrels get to the bulbs.
Reply:It sounds like a Dahlia cultivar like Thomas Edison. Dahlias bloom earlier than mums. Dahlias bloom in the spring to summer.
