When I was growing up in the Washington, DC area, there was a tree that had large, pink/purple, tulip like flowers in the spring. Does anyone know what kind of tree this is?
What kind of tree has tulip like flowers?
It is a type of magnolia, sometimes called a tulip magnolia or Japanese magnolia.

Reply:There is a tree called the "tulip" tree. It is in fact a Magnolia. it is a relic of a past geological era, when it was widespread throughout North America and Europe, Now grows only in Eastern United States and China, and named after the tulip -like shape of it's greenish-yellow orange-centred blossoms, does this help?
Reply:Magnolia.
In KY there are 2 kinds, the big evergreen with huge white flowers, then the smaller one that drops its leaves in the fall, and spring time has smallish (compared to the white magnolia) purple flowers that are similar to a tulip.
Up North, we only had the purple magnolia.
Reply:I know this as a magnolia (UK), not sure if that's another name for a tulip tree
http://www.theflowerexpert.com/content/g...
They come in all sorts of colours, really beautiful majestic trees when mature
Reply:Could be a Magnolia. Could also be a Tulip Poplar which is pretty common in the D.C. area. Look up Liriodendron tulipfera and see if that's close.
Reply:I always thought the Magnolia tree flowers looked like tulips. But this probably isn,t the answer your looking for..
Reply:a tulip tree -not very well suited for drought zones, but beautiful and unique.
Reply:I have seen the type of tree you are talking about, and I have always heard it referred to as a tulip tree.

Why does the purple flower "Maciejka (Matthiola longipetala)" release its scent in the evening only?
Matthiola longipetala (night-scented stock)
There is nothing like relaxing in the garden on a warm summer's evening with floral scents perfuming the air. Many plants have nocturnal pollinators and so release their fragrance only at night. These include such familiar flora as honeysuckles (Lonicera species) and garden mignonette (Reseda odorata). A less familiar evening-scented herbaceous plant is night-scented stock (Matthiola longipetala), native from Greece to Southwest Asia, and a cousin of the better-known florist's stock (Matthiola incana). This cold-hardy annual grows about 1 1/2-feet tall and produces narrow, linear, three-inch-long gray-green leaves. The 3 1/4-inch wide, cross-shaped, highly fragrant pink, white, or lavender flowers are borne on racemes throughout the summer. Night-scented stock likes its summer cool, so it excels in northern zones. Give it full sun and regular moisture.

Many flowers that release scent at night are pollinated by moths, insects that are active at night.

Any ideas for Flowers for Wedding Favors?
We are having a Garden wedding and for our favors we are going to by small pots and have our names/date calligraphed on them. We want to plant seeds in them and let it be a surprise as to what flowers will bloom. But we can't even figure out what flower to put inthem!?! Any ideas on A small (and will stay small) purple or blue flower that is low maintanance that we could plant in the pots?

Violets are great potted plants with a beautiful purple/blue hue to them. They are affordable and last a long time. There are tons of varieties as well so you can look and see which kind you like and plant them.
Bluebells are beautiful wildflowers that spring up in no time and are perfect potted plants.

Reply:Petunias... they look nice if mass planted.
But if you want something that is unique for each individual, perhaps you should consider growing pansies called "happy face"...you tend to find some pansies with different colors and shapes mixed together. Some pansies have purple yellow colour, while others have an orange colour. Buy different types of panises and mix them together to see who ended up with what colour.
Because you are preparing for a wedding ceremony - you should aim for annuals because they grow fast and they can all take them home.

What is plant called? On Angel Island-grows at ground level&as shrub, long spikes of purple flowers.?
Hi Flower Power,
It is called Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans). It is a non-native plant that does well in moderate coastal climates.
I hope this helps.

Which Angel Island? There's one in California and one in Minnesota.
I think they're liatrises. I can't be sure because of different species, but if you look up images of liatrises, they sure look like them.

What color bridesmaid dresses would look good with lavender and peach flowers?
I'm planning a fall wedding and found a beautiful boquet of light purple and peach flowers that I would love to have. I'm just not sure if the color will be ok for an October wedding. There are some whites and greens in it as well. Can anyone think of a fall color that would match purple and peach....maybe a darker purple or green was all I could come up with. Thanks for your help!!
What color bridesmaid dresses would look good with lavender and peach flowers?
I would go with a dark purple or maybe even a rust orange.
Reply:I'd say use dark purple for the dresses, as this color is a universally flattering one and there will be enough contrast between the color of the flowers and the dress for the flowers to really pop in photos.
Reply:I'd go with a medium purple or a dark peach itself. Actually, coral could work, too.
Reply:Navy would look good with both colours
Reply:brown or deep purple would look great. Both colors remind me of fall.
Reply:I think a really rich plum color would be nice. This color is really pretty and warm so it would go well in the fall:

This bronzy, caramel color might be nice as well:

Reply:I would go with a dark purple too, looks great for fall weddings!
Reply:tiel, purple and tiel are the easiest colors to coordinate, as well as peach, flowers and such much esier to find and coordinate. good luck and congrats
Reply:why not try an emerald green dresses or
a dark purple will go with those colore... or you can go black or gold since its gonna be in fall..
either way good luck...
Reply:maybe a soft yellow
Reply:I would think that a nice sage green color would look beautiful with the lavender and peach flowers.
The darker purple would look nice or a dark yellow.
Reply:I like the darker shade of purple idea best
Reply:the darker purple will suit perfectly.
otherwise perhaps emerald green MIGHT look alright. take the bouquet or a photo of it to a local material store and hold it up against a variety of colours. this will give you a good idea.
Reply:A chocolate color. I'm a huge fan of brown, so I suggest that. Using a neutral color increases the odds of the dress ever being used again (although its still incredibly unlikely). Browns also look great on almost any skin tone, and flatter the figure. Also, its a very appropriate color for the season.
Reply:I think a darker shade of purple would go really well with those flowers, not to mention it would be nice for the fall

Reply:Perhaps the bridesmaids' bouquets in a white/ivory/cream colored flowers, like roses or calla lillies, with the stems wrapped in dark purple ribbon with pearls. then the bridal bouquet can be the cream colored flowers, highlighted by those really dark calla lillies, i think they are technically an ultra dark wine/red color but they look like a really rich dark purple, almost black. you can do the same alternated trend with the guys if you like. for example, have the groomsmen wear ties that match bridesmaid dresses with a single white calla lilly boutineer, and the groom in an ivoryish tie and a boutineer of a single dark calla lily (or reversed).
you could also throw in some gold as an accent
Reply:What about orange flowers? That would really pop off the dark.
Reply:It would be pretty to just do different shades of purple, like this bouquet:
http://weddings.theknot.com/ODB/themes/r...
If you want something brighter go for orange in it, like birds of paradise! That would be dramatic and very pretty.
Reply:My girls dresses are eggplant and they are going to carry Picasso Calla lillies, which are cream colored with deep purple centers, and ivory roses. My bouquet will be the colorful one with different shades of purple, mauve, and some very deep red as an accent. I think it is going to look great and it is something different from what I have seen lately where the brides bouquet is cream and the bridesmaids bouquets are really colorful.
Reply:for a dramatic look, I think a one-color bouquet would look nice. I think cream colored flowers would be the most elegant. or for a modern look, maybe light blue or light green (like hydrangeas). wrap the stems in dark purple ribbon.
Reply:I think light pinks would be nice
Reply:Cream or champagne would be very elegant looking with the plum. Since you don't like pink, what about a deep mauve incorporated with the cream, or deep purple status for the dramatic contrast.
It would also depend when you are getting married. I would go with seasonal flowers to stay within your budget.
Reply:I did a wedding last August where the b'maid dresses were a dark purple and we used purples, reds, %26amp; yellows in their bouquets. It was very pretty! Yellow by itself is a good choice too, b/c it is on the exact opposite side of the color wheel from purple. Therefore, it is the perfect contrasting color. Be careful not to use too dark a bouquet choice, though or they will not be seen well against the dark dresses.

Caveat: My dad was fond of ad libbing when he didn't know the answer to something. We'd be walking along through the pasture and I'd say "Hey Dad, what's that plant?" and he'd make up some baloney, like "Oh, that? It's a late-blooming variegated patent-pending."

What makes you think it is poisonous?
And why are you so fascinated with touching it?
If the Garden section couldn't answer it then I strongly doubt we would know the answer. My best bet would be to look up pictures of Poison Ivy and compare it to the picture; or, try to find out if there are ways you can tell if plants are poisonous without touching them.

Does red and purple accents work for a neutral-colored family room?
I'm trying to think of a good accent color that goes with red. Our family room has cappacino-colored walls with ultra-white baseboards, light brown tile and tan carpet. I want to jazz up the neutral colors with something edgy, yet classy. How does purple and red look together? Maybe purple and red throw pillows, fake purple and red flowers in silver vases and a red rug will go..I'm new to the decorating scene so please let me know if this sounds OK!
Does red and purple accents work for a neutral-colored family room?
No!! Back away from the purple!! With the color scheme you wrote about, I'd go for either chocolate brown or olive green accents. And as for fake flowers, they can make a place look cheap unless you get really nice silk ones.
Reply:Great = especially if you are in The Red Hat Society

If youre feeling extra bold, try tossing orange at that combination for an added punch!
Reply:PURPLES MY FAVORIET COLOR BUT SOOO DOES NOT GO WITH RED U SHOULD DO RED N LIGHT PINK...
I THINK IT WOULD LOOK GEWD WITH THE OTHER COLORS IN UR ROOM ALREADY BUT DEFINATLY GO WITH PINK!
Reply:Will work if you are careful.
Be sure to buy ALL the reds you will use and ALL the purple you will use, as both colors are difficult to match [ look at all the shades in the crayon box! ]
Add your metal [ brass or chrome ] in picture frames, candle holders, perhaps a mirror.
Get silk or fabric flowers if fake - they look better, and last a long time!
Add ornaments in the red, purple, and metal for mantel or table tops.

How do I keep leaves purple on Flowering Plum. They used to always be purple, now tend to turn green?
Usually, sun is needed to keep the rich color. Perhaps the tree has been shaded out over time or the leaves you are looking at are shaded by leaves above. If so, try thining to allow more light through (though I think it won't affect color until next year)
Are Chinese Lanterns (the flowers) supposed to grow hard purple spikes into the ground like tent stakes?
They turn white when they're in the ground. It just looks pretty strange and creepy
Are Chinese Lanterns (the flowers) supposed to grow hard purple spikes into the ground like tent stakes?
No chinese lanterns are not like that . They are not at all creepy.
There are , in fact TWO different ornamental plants that share the common name 'Chinese Lantern'
I give below the details of both with the links for their photos .
See if any one of them IS the plant in question. But in any case do not fear them.
1 )Abutilon x hybridum is a hybrid shrub in the genus Abutilon, of unknown parentage.
The common name Chinese Lantern is often used, though the same name is also commonly applied to Physalis alkekengi.
It is a popular group of hybrids that are semi-tropical, frost-tender shrubs typically growing 2-3 m tall.
The lantern-like buds open to solitary, pendulous, bell- to cup-shaped flowers to 8 cm diameter with five overlapping petals and significant staminal columns typical of the mallow family.
Flowers come in red, pink, yellow, white and pastel shades. Lobed, maple-like, light green leaves are often variegated with white and yellow.
Sow seed indoors in late winter and set out seedling plants after last frost date.

2 ) Physalis alkekengi (Bladder-cherry, Chinese lantern, Japanese-lantern, or Winter cherry),
is a relative of P. peruviana (Cape Gooseberry), easily identifiable by the larger, bright orange to red papery covering over its fruit, which resemble Chinese lanterns. It is native from southern Europe east across southern Asia to Japan.
It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 40-60 cm tall, with spirally arranged leaves 6-12 cm long and 4-9 cm broad.
The flowers are white, with a five-lobed corolla 10-15 mm across, with an inflated basal calyx which matures into the papery orange fruit covering, 4-5 cm long and broad.
It is a popular ornamental plant, though can be invasive with its wide-spreading root system sending up new shoots some distance from where it was originally planted.

Reply:No they are not thick but they are really weedy and spread like you won't believe. No dandelion can out do that type of spreading. They spread by roots in the ground and by seeds. The flowers make it worth it if you can contain it to one area only.

Petunia
Reply:How big are the flowers?
If they are about 1-2" wide, then I would say you have a Calibrachoa. These are sometimes called mini petunias and come in a variety of colors.
http://provenwinners.com/plants/default....
If they are 3-4" or more in width, then I would say you have a Petunia. Again, they are available in a wide variety of colors and recent breeding has given us some really great trailing ones.

Check out the links to compare flowers. Since there are so many varieties of each one, I cannot say for certain which one you have. My guess would be the Surfinia 'Mini Mini Purple' from the surfinia.com link. Also keep in mind that new ones come out every year and the old ones get replaced by them. So, it can be hard to find the exact one if the plant is a few years old.

Trying to solve crossword: 2 words, 5, 4 letters; large Mediterranean plant, pea family, purple flowers. Help
Judas-tree (Cercis siliquastrum) is a small tree to 10-15 m tall native to the south of Europe and southwest Asia. The flowers have an agreeably acidic bite, and are eaten in mixed salad or made into fritters. The tree was frequently figured in the 16th and 17th century herbals.
This small, sparsely branched tree is said to be the one from which Judas Iscariot hanged himself after betraying Christ, but the name may derive from "Judea's tree", after the region encompassing Israel and Palestine where the tree is commonplace.
Trying to solve crossword: 2 words, 5, 4 letters; large Mediterranean plant, pea family, purple flowers. Help
Might be the carob tree.
Ceratonia siliqua, Carob or St. Johnsbread trees. Belonging to the Pea family and native to the Eastern Mediterranean, they have compound, dark green foliage, inconspicuous flowers, and fruit pods 4-10" or more long.

Reply:By layers I'm assuming you mean tiers? Are the tiers stacked or separated? Maybe you can draw out what you remember and show it to your bakery. Remember when looking for cakes, don't look for your colors. If you see an orange and green cake you like it can be done in cream and yellow also. Do a search under floral wedding cakes images and hopefully you'll come across it again. Here is one of many I found. Good Luck.

Pictures of purple Hibiscus flowers?
My grandma recently was admitted into the hospital and isn't doing well, so I've decided to get a Hibiscus flower tattooed on my shoulder in her honor (she had them planted all over her yard). I want a purple one because it's her favorite color, but I'm having a hard time finding pictures of ones in purple. I've looked on Google, but there's mainly one's in other colors, and maybe 3 or 4 in purple.
Anyone know of good links to any photos of some?
Pictures of purple Hibiscus flowers?
go to deviantart.com and search "purple hibiscus".
also check out photobucket.com and search "purple hibiscus".
i found a few nice pics there.
good luck! =)
Reply:i have a hibiscus/pin up girl. it has more then one meaning to me, when i was young i was over my grandmothers house every day, i use to sit on her porch and playin the front yard every day, in front of the porch she had a couple hibiscus bush's, i would sit on the porch and pick the snails and bugs and stuff near it, so it reminds of my great childhood memories at my grandmothers house and i love her soo much. she also lived in miami south florida and its also a really popular flower down there and thats where i am from. well all this talk about my tattoo here it is. the pin up is the stigma, my 305 tattoo is miami's area code

Reply:I had very little luck finding ones in purple so if you can, find many different shades of purple. Like go to a hardware store by the paint and get the paint samples they have on the little paper things. Take them to your grandmother and ask her to choose her favorite. Then you can just take that color and the picture of the flower you like to the tattooer.
Good Luck!!!
And I am very sorry to hear about your grandmother.

just ask the tattooist to color it in purple it doesnt matter what color the pic is , just be specific with the hues and tones , try to go with something that will pop against ur skin

Reply:I can verify that this is absolutely an anemone (pronounced ah-neh-ma-nee) and it is hardy to zone 6, growing from fall planted bulbs that bloom in spring. This type lasts very well in a vase and makes a beautiful addition to spring bouquets. If you decide to plant these, make certain to soak the bulbs over night before planting.

Can you press fresh flowers?
I have 2 carnations and a couple of sprigs of some kind of purple flower. I want to press them, but am unsure if they are still too fresh, they were cut on Saturday. Thanks for any info!
Can you press fresh flowers?
YES!!!!! You certainly can. The fresher the better. However, unless there is a need to have it flat, a carnation will dry on it's own. Better yet, go to a craft store like Michaels and purchase a product called silica gel beads. They are what you find in little packets in products like aspirin, vitamins, sometimes purses, etc. There purpose is to absorb moisture. You carefully cover the flower in these beads and let stand or you can even put them in your microwave on low for a short period. They will come with instructions and varying times for different flowers. You can actually pick a fresh floer and have it preserved in less than 5 minutes!!!! Retains the bright, fresh color and looks just picked. Experiment a bit because it is easy to cook them too hot and lose the color. This is my favorite way. Happy preserving!!!! It is fun!
Reply:I used to press them all the time. I wouldn't wait until next Saturday as they may have lost their color by then. I just used newspaper in a huge book to weigh them down.
Reply:i press all of my fresh flowers the same day! they havent ever turned brown or any weird colors. i usually put my flowers in the middle of a thick book and then put one more heavy book on top. they are dry and beautifully pressed within a week. if you are going for a faster approach, you can put the flowers in between two smalls boards and set a pyrex dish on top and put it all in the micro. for 5 min.
Reply:I would probably wait until this weekend. Then you will need to spray them with the stuff you get at the craft store (sorry, can't think of the name, but they will know what it is) in order to keep them from turning brown.

What is the name of a purple plant that has buds that only flower into bright pink blooms 1 time each?
I have a plant with purple leaves and purple roots. New leaves that grow are green and turn purple within a day or so. It seems like it can't be overwatered and loves the hot weather. Since the extremely hot weather has kicked in, the plant seems to flourish. It also blooms bright pink tubular flowers that only last for 1 day, but it takes several weeks for the buds to grow. I think the plan looks very unusual and has been very easy to grow. I really want to know what this plant is. I have search the internet and there are several plants w/ purple leaves and pink flowers but they are not my plant. Please help!!!!
What is the name of a purple plant that has buds that only flower into bright pink blooms 1 time each?
sounds like the elegant weed thistle to me. If it just got there on it's own accord.
Reply:I guess your plant is called "Purple Hearts"
Reply:thats definitely 'Purple Hearts'
Reply:Could be wandering jew or ornamental yam (almost black, 3 lobed leaves, vine), more description of the folliage would help. Tried with no success to find you a photo.
good luck
Reply:Could be Purple Hearts or "Wandering Jew"...you should post a photo... =)

Purple tree flowers?
Lilac. very fragrant. not a tree, but a shrub. can get tall and woody. and then all the flowers are at the top. pruning,to keep them bushy and flowering where you can see the flowers is a 3 year process.mentally divide the stems coming out of the ground into 3 sections. now cut away one of the sections to ground level.(do this after blooming) Then for the next 2 years cut away the next "section" that you have marked off, The plant will rejuvenate from the ground. it will be thick, and bushy and be covered in blooms!... it is a hardy perennial, so it only blooms for 2 or 3 weeks a year. go ahead and take off all the dead twigs from the spent flowers after blooming.
Reply:Definately a lilac as said here..Please keep in mind..all parts of the lilac bush/vine are very poisonious to plants, children, and any humans..especially the berries right before blooming..
Reply:Idaho locus, one of my favs!

What's the name of the tree full of purple flower in California?
I live in LA, and it's definitely Jacaranda. They are so beautiful! Check out this picture linked below.
What's the name of the tree full of purple flower in California?
Probably agree on Jacaranda. They are in bloom in Florida right now too.
Reply:they are called jacarandas the purple trees blooming everywhere right now
Reply:sounds like a "blue potato bush" .... it's tropical and has hundreds of purple blooms all over it!
Reply:I'll take a guess. Is it a Jacaranda? We have similar climate to California, and a lot of similar trees grow well in New Zealand. Jacaranda is a deciduous tree with heaps of purple flowers. They drop all over the place. Very pretty!

Live in Indiana, yard has some weeds with purple flower, need to kill.?
Is their a weed killer that will take care of these without hurting the grass? I believe its a brodleaf of some kind. Or is there a environmental safe way to take care of (besides pulling by hand)?
Thanks,
Live in Indiana, yard has some weeds with purple flower, need to kill.?
You need to find out what it is. If it's what I think it is, NEVER pull a weed until you know what it is. If it's spread by runners all you're doing is making it grow more. Home Depot and Lowe's only have clerks. Garden centers and greenhouses have trained, and sometimes licensed, pros who are paid for their knowledge.
Reply:Yeap your right. Look for a broad leaf weed killer only and your grass will survive. There are several types on the market. Just ask at one of the big box stores in the garden dept. It's that easy.
An environmentally safe way to kill any type of weed is to poor boiling water over it or purchase horticulture grade vinegar which is much stronger than the type available in the grocery store. It works really fast if your spray it on on a hot day. Just fry those weeds. Then depending on how thick your weeds in the lawn are you can always torch them. Purchase a weed torch again at one of the big box stores the fuel is butane. Light the business end of the torch and before you know it within an instant there gone. Yeah!!! Good luck.
Reply:Sounds like you have some Henbit. Its a winter annual, which means that it germinates in late summer, grows through the fall, goes more or less dormant through the winter, and then flowers and seeds in the spring. So once you see the flower, spraying won't do much good. In fact it might actually make the plant go to seed all that much faster before it dies. My suggestion is to mow off or string trim as much of it as you can, pull what can't be trimmed, and plan on putting a pre-emergent herbicide down between the first and 15th of August. The pre-emerg will keep the henbit seed (and many other kinds of seed) from germinating.
Good luck, henbit is a pain in the backside, but luckily it's an annual so it will be gone soon........
Reply:First thing to do is determine what you're dealing with.

If none of these hit the mark, just browse botanical sites, or find someone with some agricultural knowledge to help identify. Search terms including your state, leaf, and flower descriptors should help you get close.
You can probably get by with a broad range weed killer to remove it, though it would be preferable to ID the plant and specifically target it. your local home improvement store (lowe's, home depot) should be able to help.
Reply:You need to mow once per week on the same day. Set your mower setting at 2-1/2 to 3 inches tall. Then water each section of the lawn for about 30 to 40 minutes. In time this will get rid of your weeds. Mow the weeds before they turn to seeds.
Reply:Enforcer brand Broad leaf killer. available at local co-op and some home improvement stores. And its coverage versus cost its a better deal.

What is the best weed killer for those odd purple flowered weeds?
Now that all depends on if your talking about in your turf area or just the bed areas with no danger of harming the grass. You "don't" want to use "Weed B Gone" if you have a "warm season" grass or it will kill it too. If you are talking about in the lawn and you have a warm season grass, you can only use Ortho's "Weed B Gone" for "southern lawns". The original formula is not made for warm season turf. If you have a "cool" season turf then it is ok to use the original Weed B Gone. If you are talking about in the bed areas "only", you can use "roundup" and it will do the trick. One application of either of the three will take care of the existing problem until the next wave of weeds begin to germinate, at which time you can do it all over again. Hope this answers your question...
Added Info: Nothing like re-arranging ones answer when the right one happens to pop up. The compliment was appreciated... ^_^

What is the best weed killer for those odd purple flowered weeds?
If you are talking about the short purple flowering plants that grow all over the yard this time of year, they soon die out when the weather warms. The "weed" is called henbit.
Any weed killer will kill it. I just enjoy it while it is so pretty.
You can also easily pull it out or rake it out of a yard since it is so poorly rooted.
Reply:I am assuming those odd purple flowered weeds you so much want to kill is Milk Thistle. Milk Thistle is a plant used for liver problems. If you must kill them I suggest you at least harvest them for their medicinal purposes.
Reply:Do not use Round-Up if these weeds are located in your lawn. (Round-up kills grass) Use Weed-B-Gone. Spray weeds with Weed-B-Gone when target weeds are dry and temperature is warm (50 or so). Weed-B-Gone will kill weed as well as destroy the weed root system so it will not regenerate. Purple flowers are more than likely Henbit, but could be Speedwell or African Violet. (Weed-B-Gone kills all 3). It may take 2 or 3 applications to completely remove all of weeds depending on the number of weeds you have.
To further clarify:
If using on grass, determine the type of grass you have: Weed-B-Gone is safe on most common "warm season" grasses like Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass and Buffalograss. However if you have St. Augstinegrass, which is also a common warm season grass, it will kill it. Any other specific questions, consult the label on the bottle; in most cases for spot applications this stuff works great.
Billy Rae's statement is not complete, surprising for someone with 25 years experience in landscaping and a pesticide license.
Reply:Round up, is really good
Reply:Round up! Those are all over our yard and that's what we use.
Reply:Sounds like ground ivy( creeping charly) to me either use round up or weed be gone but you need to spray when they are in flower for best results hope this helps.

I think this could be a variety of Trillium.
Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trillium
There are a lot of varieties, and cultivars, but more details would be needed for a better guess.

It has tiny purple flowers that look like a small tube closed on one end. It has leaves that are like stacked on top of each other. It grows all over the lawn but I don't know what it is.

It sounds like either henbit or purple deadnettle

D last time i sent my girl purple flowers, she liked them very much. would it be boring sending d same color a?
purple is the color of her birth-stone. i need a color that tells her i love her more than words can explain
D last time i sent my girl purple flowers, she liked them very much. would it be boring sending d same color a?
Well, Let's see. You may try sending her a bunch of orange, yellow, or pink flowers, and in the middle, place 1 purple (but very pretty) flower and tell her that among all of the women in the world, she is the most distinguished and the most beautiful of all (it will be understood that the purple flower represents your girl).
Reply:heck, at least you're sending her flowers
===How about red/pink/white roses or carnations
I hear that lately they've started to artificially dye flowers---check with your nearest florist.
Reply:Go for a different color. I'm sure it was the sending of the flowers that impressed her, not the color.
Reply:ask the florist if they have several tints of the color purple, and have them make arrangement of them blended together and 1 white flower in the middle
Reply:try differtn dark colored shades.. with purple as the center piece.. and dont let the flowers do all the talking :) include a sappy card too ^^
Reply:Why fix it if it an't broke. Stick with what works.
Reply:My goodness the fact that you sent them in the 1st place was awesome. Then the fact that you want to send more is even MORE awesome! Your girl is so privileged that you're worrying about something as minor as the color.
My ex of 4 years never sent me flowers. Not once.
Just the fact you're doing it at all is great.
Keep up the good work.
You must be getting laid ;)

How can I kill these purple weeds/flowers in my lawn?
I have these purple weed/flower things in my lawn (technically my 'idiota' neighbor's lawn, but he's a complete and utter moron and doesn't take care of his yard. He leaves it unmowed where the weeds are near the property line because he know's I WILL mow it since I cant stand it!), in any case they look like flowers, and I've tried weed-b-gon and it kills the dandelions and other weeds just fine, but not these darned flowers/weeds!
They don't really look like henbits as many sites suggest, the flowers are 2 inches long and 'droopy' and very pretty purple (not pretty when they are random patches on my/the moron's lawn OF COURSE)
I live in NC, and I wonder if anyone out there knows how to kill these things without killing my/'estupido's' lawn!
How can I kill these purple weeds/flowers in my lawn?
I am in NC too, and have seen these beautiful purple flowers in my lawn. I take them out by the root everytime they pop up. I have seen people grow these "weeds" with beautiful purple flowers around here. They resemble evening primroses, which are pretty invasive, as well.
I don't know if you can kill them completely.
Reply:If it is truely a weed, fertilize it. Miracle grow the sh-- out of it. They will either die or make you proud they are there. If you still don't like it, mix some miracle grow with Madge's favorite dish washing liquid Palmolive and pour it on each one. That will kill anything.
Reply:In my experience, what works to get rid of weeds is to just pull them up, and keep at it-- don't let them grow back to propogate.

What is the name of a deep orange flower with purple pistils?
The flower was growing in my backyard. It has a touch of purple at the base of each petal. The stem is thick and has hairs on it. The leaves have some fines hairs on them and they also have little needles at the end of each section. I assume it is to protect it from being eaten by bugs or animals.
What is the name of a deep orange flower with purple pistils?
It does sound like a poppy but it would help if you described the flower shape %26amp; leaf shape. Poppies have very distinct flower shape, the leaves are tissue thin, the seed head forms an inverted cone with a "hat", and the buds are very fat and egg shaped.
If it is a poppy as everyone seems to think then this website should have a picture.

Reply:it could be a poppy, i have some in my yard, and they look like what you descirbe.
Reply:Oriental Poppies- they are a perrenial plant and are quite hardy. Stems exude a milky substance when cut that is an irritant. Because of this substance the flowers don't work well for cut flowers.

Blue colored flowers symbolizing trust and unity.
Many types of blue flowers can add color to your wedding through traditional floral arrangements or by adding blue colored flowers to your reception decorations. Blue is the color of trust and unity making it a great choice for a wedding flower color.
Blue wedding flowers can add a level of sophistication and elegance to your ceremony and reception through the use of blue tones. While it is true that blue is one of the harder colors to match exactly, there are quite a few blue wedding flowers whose shades vary from pale baby blue to dark blue-green.
Types of blue flowers include:

"True blue" flowers are relatively rare; what botanists call "blue" is anything from bluish lavender all the way through true blue. You're asking for the bluest end of that.
Try looking at the genus Gentiana-- there are a number of species with very blue flowers, including Gentiana verna and G. acaulis. Or at Meconopsis, commonly called "blue poppy", though there are a number of species with red or yellow flowers in the genus. Take a look at M. x sheldonii, M. betonicifolia, among others. Those are my two favorite genera with really vivid blues.

Will wild passion flowers effect my cultivated variety "purple passion" plants.....?
There is a vine called a Purple Passion Vine, which isn't a passion vine at all. This won't be affected.
There is a passiflora called the maypop, that often grows wild in the SE of the US of A and this is often called 'Purple Passion Vine'. It really isn't all that different from any wild vine, even if you have a fancy variety of it, so having other maypops around will help yours set fruit.
If your passiflora is just a hybridized variety called 'purple passion', it probably doesn't set anything edible, so wild vines won't hurt.
Wild passion vines don't get sprayed, so they will be a source for caterpillars that might come and eat at your vines. If your vines are small and young, you will probably want to BT them. If your vines are mature, they can probably withstand some eating-on and if you leave the caterpillars be you will get lovely butterflies in addition to your blooms.
Will wild passion flowers effect my cultivated variety "purple passion" plants.....?
Only if you allow them to fruit, then there is a chance they will bother them. If you are just after flowers then there shouldn't be any issues.

I've heard that theres a purple flower thats bad luck.this flower grows on walls or fences that are near to it
the bad luck starts when u pick the flower.this bad luck causes u you u drop plates and cups that are breakable. is this true? and if it is which flower is it?

There is no such thing as bad luck plants. Only if it is poisonous and you eat it, can a plant actually cause you bad luck. Treat all those myths with skepticism, good and bad luck is in your own mental attitude.
Reply:There is a plant with purple flowers that looks a little like a potato plant and it then goes on to produce purple shiny berries about 2mm in diameter. Yes it IS bad luck to pick this one as it is called woody nightshade and is the second most poisonous plant in the uk.
With regard to cups and saucers etc. i really think you need to take some things with a pinch of salt.

...what could you learn about it?
A. The genotype of its offspring
B. Its genotype
C. Its phenotype
D. The genotype of its parents
E. The phenotype of its offsprin

I'm trying to identify a flowering vine. It has purple conical clusters of flowers, and a flat teardrop seed.
There are several flowering vines that fit the information you've provided. What shape are the flowers? How long do the flowers last? When do they open? When do they close? What is the shape of the leaves? Any more information you can provide would be of a great help in identification?

Sounds like you have a cross between a Crocus and a Poinsettia. My advise is to take good care of it, and go to the library and search
all the book you can, or take it to or call you local college {Horticulture Dept} and see what they can tell you. Mabe you have something no one else does. Do not give it to anyone, sounds really pretty. Good luck, wish I could see this mistery plant!

How to I care for my new (& newly planted) purple flowering plum tree?
Just planted it about two weeks ago. Live in Missouri.
How to I care for my new (%26amp; newly planted) purple flowering plum tree?
Make sure it never dries out the first few years. Don't over water just deep watering when it needs it. Mulch it with well rotted manures and organic matter (hay). Fertilize annually, and you should have a beautiful tree in no time. They are hardy and no problem to grow.
Reply:Water it weekly and protect it from deer who could rut on it. They will rub their antlers on the trunk and kill the tree. I lost a beautiful crabbapple that way. Wrap a mesh loosely around the trunk.

Where do purple flowers get their colours from?
Good question
Flower colors of red, pink, blue and purple come mainly from the pigments called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are water soluble pigments in the class of
chemicals called flavanoids, which are phenolics. Anthocyanins are found in the
cell vacuoles and are glucosides meaning they contain a sugar molecule.
A classic experiment uses the anthocyanins in red cabbage as a pH indicator
because anthocyanins change color depending on the pH. You could do the same
thing with flower petals. An easy way is to crush a red rose petal on a white
plate with the back of a spoon and add either vinegar (acid) or baking soda
(base) and note the color change. A college lab manual has an experiment on
chromatography of flower anthocyanins (Witham et al. 1971).
Flowers may also contain another class of pigments called carotenoids, which
are responsible for red in tomato and orange in carrot root. Carotenoids are
red, yellow and orange in color. They do not reside in the vacuole but in
organelles called plastids, either in green chloroplasts or in nongreen
chromoplasts
Where do purple flowers get their colours from?
I DONT KNOW SORRY!
Reply:from biology point of view pigment anthocyanin is reponsible for it.
from physics point of view it shows this type of colour coz it reflects some part of the sun light falling on it which gives us purple colour appearence.

Transferring ground flowers to a pot?
I just took a walk around the house outside and found some of the prettiest purple flowers. They are gorgeous! The only problem is, they're off to the side of our driveway and I'm afraid that some neighbors may kill them! I'd really like to transfer them into a regular pot. What are the best methods for taking ground plants and making them into potted ones? Will this little guy have any chance of surviving if I keep it watered and tended to every day? What are some tips and tricks you would use? Thank you!
Transferring ground flowers to a pot?
what can it hurt to try.. if the neigbors are gonna kill 'em anyway.
Get good potting soil and a pot larger than the plant's root mass. place the root mass in the potting soil and water it well. keep the plants in the same light conditions that they were in before and keep the plants watered and add some fertilizer after you see that they will be OK...
Hope for the best..
good luck!
Reply:I would get a large enough planter. Put some rocks in the bottom, put your plant in, and add potting soil. Then just water and feed it regularly.
Reply:I've done this many times. Just dig widely around the base. Loosen the dirt with water (do not damage the roots) Put it in a pot with potting soil. Water with miracle grow. Or, you could move it to a safer place in your yard. Same way.

What can I use to poison the purple flowered tibouchina plant?
I have tried drilling deep holes and pouring in blackberry poison and have also tried roundup. I have also chopped some of the roots. I don't just want to cut it down and leave a stump I want to totally get rid of it. It's trunk is fairly large and has many main roots sprouting off the base. Any suggestions I would be apprecaitive. thanks
What can I use to poison the purple flowered tibouchina plant?
Why not try digging a hole under the roots in the ground and start a fire under it to see if you can kill it that way and to burn the root and trunk system otherwise you may have to get someone in with a stump grinder but that will probably cost a bit of money.
Reply:If its trunk and roots are as sprawling as you have suggested, it is most likely mis-identified as they are shrubs (Tibouchina urvilleana) and do not develop as you have suggested.

Who knows the name of a purple-flowered plant I thought was archiminius?
It's a cutting from a friend and it's lovely but I want to know how to propogate and how to care for it in the winter.
Who knows the name of a purple-flowered plant I thought was archiminius?
Achimenes. Gesneriaceae. This is a perennial. It is a Native to tropical America. Related to the African Violet and Gloxinia family. They require shde outdoors but bright light indoors and regular water. Most tender and mostly grown in pots. When grown in beds is normally used as a ground cover. They are grown from rhizomes so you would most likely need to get one of these from your friend in the fall when they are lifted. I do not know where you live but in most areas they will freeze if not lifted and stored through the winter and replanted in the spring. Just enjoy the cutting you have and tell your friend to give you a start of the rhizome this fall. You can store it in a a cool dry place over winter and plant it in the spring. I normally store mine bulbs and rhizomes in dry peat in tubs layered with newspaper through the winter. Just label it so you know what they are.
I hope this helps. ~smiles~
Reply:first you need a detail description of the plant or at least give the correct name of the plant that you thought it was (there're no archiminius plant) Then we might be able to help.
Reply:if it looks like a purple daisy, with the petals going toward the stem sounds like purple corn flower , but don't hold me to it!

What are some pretty exotic flowers that would look good as a tattoo?
I have medium brown skin and I'm going for a purple flower on my foot...so.... Any suggestions would be appreciated.
What are some pretty exotic flowers that would look good as a tattoo?
Just google up "purple flower" under images and you will get tons. I particularly love purple columbines - actually ALL columbine.
Purple sometimes is a problematic ink for fading at times and on the foot it can fade pretty badly. You might want something on the purple (or other) pastel side to show nicely.
Reply:no. no tattoes look pretty.
Reply:lotus flowers are great and so is the dahlia.you can check out my lotus on my space.

Reply:Maybe a hibiscus flower? :]

Reply:I think Plumeria's are also very beautiful.
Reply:Hibiscus flowers usually always look awesomeee!
Reply:Orchids. So pretty! =)
Reply:I cant reccomend any flowers but Lei Lanni is Hawianin for Heavnly Flower that would look good with anything you pick.
Reply:Orchids, they are purple and white, not all but some. Also a hibiscus flower would be pretty!
Reply:Lotus, peony, orchid. My friend has a ghost orchid on her foot and it's beautiful!

What kind of flowers are these?
Do you know what kind of flowers these are? Both of purple flowers and the white flowers. Thank you!!!
My sincerest apologies for the cheesy fading pictures. I couldn't find a better place to post the images. I think Yahoo should put a place to upload pictures when you ask questions...

What kind of flowers are these?
A shot of the leaves would really help identify both of these flowers.
I think the purple flowers are Dames Rocket (Hesperis matronalis L.). Someone else suggested Garden Phlox, but the stamens in Phlox are not yellow/green.
The white flowers looks a bit like a snapdragon. Without seeing the back of the flower, and the size of the flower it's hard to tell.
Reply:The purple one looks just like Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' (wallflower) to me:

The white one looks like Nemesia fruticans (a white form) or a new hybrid Nemesia, it's a little hard to tell from the picture but I'm pretty certain:

Hope this helps.
EDIT: I agree with sailinshoes, it's hard to identify for certain without seeing the leaves. Hesperis and Snapdragon are good calls too.
I still do think that the purple one is Erysimum and not Hesperis because of 2 things: 1) Erysimum flowers up the stalk and once the flowers are spent, they drop and leave the tiny stem as is evident in your photo, 2) Erysimum has a yellow center and Hesperis does not.
In regards to the white one, I did ponder snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) too-which it could very well be. I went with Nemesia because in the photo it looks like the flowers are more clustered and that is reminiscent of Nemesia. Snapdragons flower on a stalk.
Again, this is just my opinion. Seeing the foliage, more of the flower and measurement of the flower would help a lot. At any rate, you have some good answers to investigate further.

Question about caring for iris flowers?
Neighbor dug up a bunch of his in-full-bloom purple standard iris flowers for me and told me to plant them. They are beautiful. I planted them a week ago, and so far, so good (they seem to have "took"). The existing purple flowers are gorgeous, but I don't see any new buds. Are these a type that just bloom once a year and that's it? Once the flowers are gone, do I just leave the leaves as they are in the soil or do I dig them up?
Question about caring for iris flowers?
Yes, the iris just bloom once a year. You can leave them right in the ground, and once the blooms are over trim the leaves down to about 6 inches high, in a fan shape. This helps reduce moisture loss and encourages new growth. Just make sure that the tops of the rhizome are out of the soil, this is the fleshy part under the leaves and over the roots.
I love iris, you're lucky they are still blooming well for you.
Reply:Once a year bloom; but is a perennial.
They will return year after year if planted deep enough. Reproductions are created from new bulbs off existing roots. Next year may be same number of Iris you planted; years later, you should be seeing additional stalks.
I don't trim mine until either fall or next spring; this is an individual's taste.

In pea plants, with the genes for flower color, purple flowers (P) are dominant over red (p). With the genes?
for pollen grain shape, long pollen grains (L) are dominant over round (l). Plants heterozygous for purple flowersand long pollen grains (PpLl) are test-crossed with the homozygous recessive (ppll). The following offspring are produced:
purple, long 118
red, round 122
purple, round 32
red, long 28
Are the genes for flower color and pollen grain shape on the same chromosome? Can you figure out how far apart they are on the chromosome?
In pea plants, with the genes for flower color, purple flowers (P) are dominant over red (p). With the genes?
You need to do a punnet square and work out what result you would expect. Then you need to analyse how far away from the expected results your actual results are. Are the differences in result the same for both characteristics? If so, it is likely that the two characteristics are linked (on the same chromosome).
The number of recombinations reflects how far apart they are on the chromosome, but I can't remember how to calculate it. What's the recombination rate per kilobase of DNA? You should be able to figure it out if you know that.

If you are going for the same effect in your own home garden, there are hardy shrub fuchsias in many species and hybrids available. Just remember that "hardy" is a relative term.

How do you cross pollinate flowers in Animal Crossing: Wild World?
I'm only one bug away from the Golden Net, and it's the Peacock Butterfly. However, I don't know how to cross pollinate flowers, so I can't get any Blue, Black, or Purple flowers. If you could be detailed, that would be great. Thanks!
How do you cross pollinate flowers in Animal Crossing: Wild World?
The best method for getting the hybrids is to plant the flowers arranged in a diamond pattern on the ground.
There is a nice hybrid guide here: http://www.animalxing.com/hybrids.php . It tells you which flowers to plant next to each other to get the different colors.

Where do purple flowers get their color?
pigments, dies
Where do purple flowers get their color?
it`s all in genetics. if the flowers that it was born from were purple or one of them was purple, then that`s why it is. Purple is dominate over white etc. so thats why...
Reply:the purple color is from a pigment called anthocyanin.
Reply:pigments...there are a whole range of differnet types and are in different levels in different flowers to give the colours we see.
anthocycanins do reds/purples/blues
flavones pale yellow,
carotenes do yellow, orange and red
So while anthocyanins do the main purple the intesity and shade will be affected by the other pigments too.

What types and colour flowers would go with burgundy bridesmaid dresses?
I'm wearing an ivory wedding dress and having burgundy bridesmaid dresses. Initially I planned to have a dark plum colour for the bridesmaids as my favourite colour is purple but the dresses which suited my bridesmaids best came in burgundy (the closest colour they had).
I was going to have cream roses with purple freesias and purple sweet peas. Do freesias and sweet peas come in burgundy? (I can't find any pictures) and would some purple flowers go with burgundy, which is a bit more red?
What types and colour flowers would go with burgundy bridesmaid dresses?
hi bina, there's a burgundy rose with cream flecks through it ,the cream almost looks like paint splash's.. it's called abrakadabra.. it would be perfect for you ,mixed with a cream sweet pea or cream freesia.. for the brides maids a cream rose called vendella would be great.. if you go for cream for yourself it'll just blend in with the dress. where as if you go for the burgundy and leave the brides maids with the cream it'll compliment everything..if you want to put some colour in the bridesmaids dresses ,there's a lovely little flower called allium bullit.. it starts off really deep burgundy on the bottom and goes up to a purple at the top..another lovely burgundy one is zantadescia schwalder..also known as the calla lilly.. hope this helps.. good luck with the big day.. oh and yes i'm a florist..!!
Reply:cream or yellow so that it will contrast w/ the burgundy....avoid red, pink, or burgundy flowers....
Reply:I would say plain cream roses, wrapped with a burgundy ribbon, and little gems / diamonds protruding from the tops on sliver sticks that can't be seen!
Plain, Simple but so stylish and gorgeous looking!
Reply:try tiger lilies...some come white with a deep red center that would go well with the colors of your wedding or you could talk to a florist about what you are looking for
Reply:the cream and purple sound lovely, most florists will dye flowers to suit the colour you want if they don't match the colour you want.
Reply:I would stick with the cream roses which would be a contrast.

Why not just all off you have purple flowers, in the colour purple you wanted. It will still look good and make your dress and the bridemaids dresses stand out.
